The Diabetic Support Group run by La Cala de Mijas Lions Club has reported a successful awareness campaign to mark World Diabetes Day, which is commemorated each year on 14 November.

Over a number of days the group took their information table to different locations in the Mijas area, where they carried out more than 500 free glucose tests on members of the public with the help of diabetic nurses.

On Thursday 14th itself more than 100 passers-by were tested when they passed the town hall offices in La Cala. The blood sugar levels testing is part of the Lions International Federation campaign, which has so far tested nearly one million people, worldwide.

Events culminated on Sunday with the Walk for Diabetes Awareness organised in collaboration with the Mijas Foreign Residents and Sports Departments. As well as walking through La Cala de Mijas and along the boardwalk, participants enjoyed Zumba and Dancercise sessions with live entertainment from the Costa Soul Singers.

The Diabetic Support Group meets one a month in Fuengirola. Upcoming events include a Christmas fair on 30 November at Treetops Restaurant, El Chaparral Golf.
