Tired of beachgoers not respecting the protected status of the Real de Zaragoza dune system, Marbella councillors have decided to get tough.

The dunes to the east of the municipality, some of the last untouched ones, suffer as visitors break down barriers and take shortcuts to the water and ignore restrictions and park right on protected space.

The council is to improve the fencing around the area, marking out a clear, authorised route and step up inspections that will fine users up to 3,000 euros.
