The ongoing Supreme Court investigation, supported by the Guardia Civil, says that public money was used by the Catalan regional government to pay for the illegal independence referendum last year. This has been the basis for part of the legal action against ex-Catalan officials and politicians.
However, this week the national Finance minister, Cristóbal Montoro, controversially said that he saw no evidence that public funds were used, provoking calls for an urgent clarification from both sides of the separatist political crisis.
