A 26-year-old Polish man was rescued from the sea and later arrested after trying to evade police following an alleged sex attack on El Hornillo beach in Almayate last Sunday.

According to eye witnesses, the alleged attacker came out of the sea naked and started to follow a woman, who was walking along the beach, before grabbing hold of her back and touching her.

The woman managed to escape her attacker after a struggle and sought help at a nearby beach bar.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the man tried to escape on foot, before running into the water, having realised he had been reported.

Officers used the boat of a private individual to follow the man, who had managed to swim approximately 1.5 kilometres from the shore, before floating on a buoy for two hours. He refused requests to board the boat until a larger police vessel arrived at the scene and he was brought aboard with signs of hypothermia and fatigue.

They provided the man with first-aid assistance before arresting him.

He is due to appear in court in Vélez-Málaga charged with sexual assault.
