Residents sign petition against new youth hostel

Residents are collecting signatures in the hope of stopping the construction of a 23-room three-storey youth hostel on the site of Estepona's old tourist office. Building is expected to start early in 2019, and to be finished by spring 2020.

Rosa Fernández, who is responsible for collecting the signatures, explained that "the residential quality of the area will worsen, not only due to the increase in noise but also due to the loss of green space and of a well-known building". The group proposes that the hostel be built "nearer the fairground and concert venues", a location it considers "more suitable".

They suggest preserving the current building as a gallery, museum or music school. The town hall has pointed out that the plans were on public display and received no complaints. The developers said they were surprised at the complaints as they said youth hostels do not usually generate noise.
