Work has begun to make the A-397 mountain road between Ronda and San Pedro Alcántara safer, especially on the stretch between kilometres 20 and 31, which is a black spot for accidents. New road markings are being painted and signs are being replaced, and a speed camera is to be installed to monitor the road in both directions between kilometres 28 and 30.5. There will be signs to warn motorists about the radar traps.

The A-397 is nearly 50 kilometres long and is very steep and winding for most of the route. In 2015 it was the scene of 70 accidents with victims: 35 cars and 19 motorbikes were involved in these, five people died, four were injured and admitted to hospital and 47 suffered injuries which were less serious.
