Inhibitors used by the National Police in Torremolinos are causing problems for car owners who leave their vehicles in the vicinity of the police station in Calle Skal.
Used by the police to prevent espionage or unwanted transmission of information, the inhibitors have the side-effect of blocking the signals of remote control keys.
The residents of the area are aware of the problem, but dozens of visitors and tourists leave their vehicles in Calle Skal oblivious to the fact that their vehicles have not been locked.
The inhibitor can also demobilise a vehicle, especially modern cars with electrical control panels, because the frequency can shut the system down.
It is not only vehicles that are affected; these devices also interfere with alarms of nearby homes, garages doors and even television handsets.
However, one neighbour claimed that the possibility of car theft in the area was somewhat unlikely: "It is true that it is much easier to steal a car here than on any other street, but the police presence in this area deters potential thieves," he said.
