Drugs with an estimated street value of £6.3 million were recovered from the sea off the east side of Gibraltar on Wednesday, in a joint operation between the Royal Gibraltar Police and HM Customs.
The authorities were alerted to the presence of the bales by a fishing vessel, and a total of 42 were collected. The bales contained cannabis resin and weighed approximately 1.26 tonnes in total. The Spanish Guardia Civil are believed to have retrieved a further 12 bales from the sea off La Atunara beach in La Línea.
So far this year more than 4.4 tonnes of cannabis resin have been seized from local waters by the Gibraltar authorities, with an estimated street value of £22 million.
