Marbella is playing host to the fifth International Bridge Tournament which this year takes place in the H10 Andalucía Plaza hotel in Puerto Banús.
In total 180 people of 22 different nationalities are registered to take part in the competition with runs until tomorrow, giving the tournament a very cosmopolitan atmosphere, much like Marbella itself.
The contest, which started yesterday at 5pm, runs over three days, giving competitors the chance to visit Marbella as well as competing in the tournament.
Thursday began with the first session of game play, accompanied by a selection of tapas and a welcome cocktail. Today, the second round commences at 4.30pm, with the tournament drawing to a close tomorrow with the final.
After the winners have been announced, the contest ends with a prizegiving ceremony and a buffet dinner.
This year, the prize money for first place is 1,250 euros plus a trophy, and 500 euros plus a trophy for line A and line B, respectively.
Cash prizes are awarded for up to seventh place and other prizes have also been donated to the tournament by its sponsors.
Phia van Lohuizen and Geeta Siersma, organisers of this event, explain that they hope the tournament will promote not only the game of bridge, but also Marbella and the whole of the Costa del Sol. "At this time of year, hotel occupancy is low, but initiatives like this tournament mean that the Costa del Sol, particularly Marbella, attracts a good number of visitors to enjoy the area" they explain.
They add that the game of bridge is not only "very entertaining" but is "also a challenge where reasoning and memory play an important role". For this reason, the game is attracting more and more attention.
