Spain's big electricity supply company Endesa, through its subsidiary e-distribución, is operating a summer 2023 campaign, which includes inspecting electricity distribution networks to guarantee the quality of supply and act preventively before any incident occurs.
This campaign includes operations on land and in the air. The air operation is with adapted helicopters piloted by expert personnel who are able to fly very close to the power lines in order to photograph them, measure their temperature and carry out other checks. A total of 15,511 kilometres of high and medium voltage lines will be checked by helicopter in Andalucía, 1,708 of which are in Malaga province.
Endesa is investing 184,000 euros this year for these checks across Malaga province, which use the latest technology. The helicopter used has to be adapted internally to be able to install all the necessary technological elements, from the infrared camera to the photo and video cameras, including the Lidar lens which measures distances and is placed in the nose and underneath the helicopter.
A team of three people, two technical experts, and a pilot with extensive experience in these type of precision flights, fly over both high and medium voltage power lines. Infrared cameras measure the temperature of the cables, detecting areas where there may be more heat than usual. If a high temperature is recorded, this information is immediately passed on to Endesa's technicians, who carry out an exhaustive analysis and repair, if necessary. The 150-megapixel photo and 4K video cameras are responsible for taking precision images of each and every element of the cabling and the high and medium voltage pylons.
