The council in Torremolinos has announced that the new market for the 'Sabor a Málaga' local food promotional brand will open its doors to the public at the end of May. The concession for the gourmet market, located in Plaza de la Independencia, has been awarded to the Malaga-based La Reserva, an enterprise owned by local hotelier José Gómez.

The market will be the first permanent Sabor a Malaga market in the province and will consist of 22 stalls offering products carrying the brand's coveted seal of approval, a quality mark highlighting and promoting locally grown agricultural and food produce.

The building, which has been subject to several reforms over the last 20 years, has been refurbished with an investment of 300,000 euros from the provincial government and 111,667 euros from Torremolinos town hall.

The opening of the gourmet enterprise has been postponed several times, the first of which was due to structural damage to the building. In 2018, workers discovered that four supporting pillars had been removed and the building was said to have run a serious risk of collapse.

The project was further disrupted by the Covid-19 restrictions, although the town hall now expects it will be fully operational before tourists begin arriving later this year.
