The A&E department at St Bernards has been refurbished and expanded as part of a programme to streamline patient care. The minor injuries unit can now attend to five patients at a time instead of two, thereby reducing waiting times.

The A&E now has the latest infection control furniture, new ceiling and floor and additional nursing staff. Around 100 patients a day are treated in A&E, compared with between 50 and 60 when the hospital opened in 2005.
