The Junta de Andalucía regional government and the regional business confederation, CEA, have joined forces to try to turn Andalucía into the first region of Spain without single-use plastic bags.

The regional president, Juanma Moreno; regional minister responsible for Sustainable Development, Carmen Crespo; and the head of the CEA, Javier González de Lara, signed an agreement in Malaga on Tuesday to introduce alternatives to plastic bags and not wait for an EU ban to come into place in January 2021.

"We all have to make an effort and become, from a business and social point of view, a region that is at the leading-edge of Europe," said Juanma Moreno, pointing out that Andalucía is the only European region with a coastline on two seas.

González de Lara stressed that many companies have "made a huge effort to innovate and to offer alternatives that aren't overly expensive and which guarantee hygiene and product traceability".
