The annual supermarket food collection for those in need broke its own record last weekend.

Over Friday and Saturday an army of 4,000 volunteers stood outside 330 supermarkets across Malaga and the Costa helping in the 'Gran Recogida'. Saturday was the busiest day.

In total 643,700 kilos of produce were handed in by shoppers and placed in the large white boxes at checkout. This was a new record for organisers, the Bancosol foodbank, which supplies 194 charities and organisations working with those needing help in the area from a central warehouse.

This week, more volunteers have been sorting and classifying the produce. Around a third are dairy products which started being distributed immediately.
