The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid was the venue chosen on Wednesday for the launch of the international CM Malaga, Cities & Museums Trade Fair, which will be taking place on 22 and 23 June next year in Malaga's Palacio de Congresos.

The general focus of the fair, organised jointly by the Malaga congress centre and the SUR media group, will be the role of museums in cities and the way they act as social, cultural, economic and tourism agents. It will explore the changes that some cities have implemented thanks to their museums and how they fit into a world where new technology and social media play such an important role.

The launch was attended by around 100 personalities from the world of culture, many of them professionals associated with museums around the country.

"Museums have never played such an important role in the life of cities as they do now, and we need to analyse how and why that is, and also study the present and future for museums in these modern times, when there are new technological advances almost every day," said Yolanda Aguilar, the director of the congress centre, while SUR editor-in-chief Manuel Castillo pointed out that, like museums, newspapers also need to play a role in the life of local society. "This is a very exciting project," he said.

The fair is expected to attract around 1,000 professional visitors from 30 countries in its first edition next June, with 50 stands and 120 speakers.
