Ten individuals have been arrested for mistreating dogs in the Vélez-Málaga area in the last week after reports from local residents who were suspicious that the animals were being abused.
In addition to the arrests, 16 dogs of varying breeds have been rescued and are now in the care of animal rescue organisations in the area.
The animals had been abandoned or were being kept in poor conditions and one was found in an area where drugs were being kept. All of the dogs that were rescued needed some form of veterinary assistance, including emergency surgery.
A further two had already died when National Police officers got to them and two more had to be put down.
