The town halls of Torremolinos and Benalmádena have joined forces to mark World Alzheimer's Day by supporting events aimed at generating social awareness of the condition, while offering information and support for those affected by the disease. The events began last week, with the installation of an information marquee outside Torremolinos town hall.
Assisted by AFAB, the Benalmádena-based organisation that offers help to Alzheimer's sufferers and their families, the initiative provides information on the prevalence of the disease and guidelines for its detection.
The organisation has also arranged a lecture in the Pablo Picasso Cultural Centre in Torremolinos. The lecture, which takes place today, will bring together specialists, doctors, medical professionals and representatives from various charitable associations. With the theme of Social Conscience, the event will address diagnosis, treatment and awareness of Alzheimer's.
Statistics supplied by AFAB show that around 5,700 people living in the two towns are affected by dementia.
This year AFAB has received a grant of 10,000 euros from the municipal funds of both councils, which is a 25 per cent increase on the amount received in 2017.
