Town hopes to restore sugar cane factory to show importance of industrial past

  • The factory ceased to be operational in 1945.

Torrox town hall has announced plans to restore the old sugar cane factory situated in Torrox Costa.

Mayor of Torrox, Óscar Medina, revealed last Friday that the town hall has approached Spain's central government for financial support for the project, which would see the town's San Rafael factory refurbished.

"It is a historical site which is fundamental if we want to understand industrial development in the Axarquía up until the mid-18th century and there is a general feeling among residents that they would like to see it restored," Medina said.

The San Rafael sugar cane factory, or 'ingenio', is considered one of the best-preserved of the province's historic buildings. It ceased to be operational in 1945.

The Axarquía is home to a number of 'azucarera' buildings. However, Frigiliana's is the only one that is still producing 'miel de caña' (sugar cane honey).
