Centre-half Jorge Merés proposed loan move to Malaga is off. Despite the 20-year-olds desire to join, German side 1. FC Köln stole a march by making an offer to Sporting Gijón for a permanent transfer.
An agreement in principle with Malaga had been reached weeks ago but fan pressure altered Gijóns preference and the club decided to lower its asking price to force through a sale.
The transfer fee is in the region of ten million euros, higher than the offer also put forward by Sampdoria.
Malaga must now look at alternative options in the market and have now called up Mikel Villanueva to the training camp, despite being on the verge of completing a move away.
