Estepona council is to build a new car park beside the Nuestra Señora del Carmen church, which will cost one euro a day to use. It will be the sixth of its type in the town and they are all located in areas with a great many vehicles. Like the others, this new facility will be run by a local charity.
The new car park will have three levels below-ground and room for 380 vehicles. Half of the spaces will be available for purchase by people who are officially resident in Estepona, like the one which is currently being finished in the Plaza del Ajedrez.
The council came to an agreement with the Church authorities in Malaga in order to be able to use the site, as it will take up part of the esplanade beside the church.
Once the construction is completed a public square will be created at ground level and the existing parking spaces will be replaced.
As well as benefiting residents of Huerta Nueva and the area near Calle San Roque, the new car park will also be useful for people visiting La Rada beach or the new cultural centre which is being built by the Punta Doncella lighthouse.
The network of cheap car parks in Estepona began in March 2018 with the first one opening in Plaza Antonia Guerrero, in the historic town centre. Then came the one at the athletics stadium, there is another in Avenida San Lorenzo, one is being built beneath the new town hall, and the other in Plaza del Ajedrez will be completed soon.
