Several groups are warning that urgent action is required with the iconic Torre del Cable in Marbella at risk of collapse.
The alarm was first sounded after the Official Centre for Underwater Research (COIS) discovered, after various dives, that the structure under the surface had been compromised.
Now, engineers and groups such as the Asociación de Espigones Emergidos and Cilniana are calling for a detailed study to be carried out in order to ascertain the risks and outline the maintenance actions that are necessary. "The tower is going to fall, what we don't know is when", says the president of Cilniana, Francisco López.
The tower, a remnant of the overhead cable runway that transported buckets of iron ore, forms part of "the memory of the town" and must be preserved, argued Ángel de la Torre, a mining engineer and member of Cilniana.
