Opposition councillors in Alhaurín el Grande have asked for a special council meeting in a bid to oust the mayor, who they say has been "illegally" exercising power for almost two years.
Presenting their submission this week for the extraordinary full council session, they said they hoped it would be the first stage towards a vote of no confidence in current mayor Antonia Ledesma.
A court recently ruled that a previous meeting of councillors aimed at voting out the mayor back in January 2017 had been wrongly halted. At the time, the town hall decided that one suspended councillor was ineligible to vote in the chamber, a move which prevented the expected majority of councillors voting down Ledesma. Now a judge has said that that decision 21 months ago was wrong.
The mayor was previously with the X Alhaurín party in 2017, but is now back as part of the PP party where she originally started her political career. She has not yet said if she will appeal the court decision.
