Former world chess champion Anatoli Kárpov (standing) was in Marbella on Saturday to launch the Spanish Chess Championship, held at the town's Puerto Deportivo.

Some 142 players are taking part over nine days.

Kárpov also participated in matches against 17 youngsters from across Spain and Gibraltar simultaneously.

The Russian came out on top in all but one: he lost to Miguel Ruiz Buendía from Cuenca.
