The hard-fought competition to gain a space on the new Monopoly España board now has a winner: Estepona. After two months of voting, 16,589,649 votes have been registered.

The town's mayor, José María García Urbano, thanked those who voted and said that this would give greater visibility to Estepona.

We are convinced that the presence of Estepona on this popular board game will help with promotion of the town and bring it to a wider audience, he said.

Estepona wasn't the only place in Malaga province to win a spot either; Mijas will also be included in the special edition of the board game, expected to be in stores by Christmas. Estepona received 571,778 votes, and Mijas occupies tenth position with 189,754.

The full list comprises Estepona, Alcobendas, Alcorcón, San Fernando, Elda, Utrera, Cartagena, Torrejón de Ardoz, Paterna, Mijas, Logroño, Guadalajara, Linares, Boadilla del Monte, Ponferrada, Zaragoza, Salamanca, Elche, Mérida, Alicante, Pedroso and Arevalillo de Cega.

During the eight weeks of voting, residents have been keen to promote some of Spain's smallest towns. This is the case with Pedroso and Arevalillo de Cega, which, despite having under 200 inhabitants between them, have received nearly five million votes.

Public participation, encouraged by local councils on social media, has been key to finding a place on the board.

This is the second time that the public has had the opportunity to decide the contents of a Spanish Monopoly edition. This time there has been a huge number of participants and we are proud to be one of the few countries in the world with our own Monopoly board, said Ignacio Gaitán, marketing director at Hasbro Iberia.
