The central government's Minister for Public Works (Fomento), Íñigo de la Serna, announced this week that the renovation of the Bobadilla-Algeciras railway line will be complete by 2021. The modernisation project has a budget of 350 million euros and is vital to improve freight transport from the ports of Malaga and Algeciras.

This is the first time that an end date has been offered for the project which has suffered delays and stoppages in recent years.

The government's commitment has cleared up doubts concerning the stretch between Antequera and Ronda. The minister's words indicate that this line will receive the same treatment as other stretches: a renewal of the existing track and the addition of a third international gauge line as well as electrification work.
