The Gibraltar Health Authority has carried out its first human corneal transplant at St Bernard's Hospital.

The surgery was performed by Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr Magdalena Popiela.

The team worked closely with the Venice Eye Bank in Italy to source the corneal donor tissue.

Until now, the patient would have had to spend several weeks in the UK for treatment following surgery there.
