The newly elected spokesperson of far-left Podemos in Madrid's regional assembly is a convicted bank robber.

José Luis Nieto Pereira, who is already an established political activist for Podemos in the capital, was sentenced in 1982 by the Audiencia Nacional to five years in jail for robbing a bank in Galicia with a radical independence group.

He served half the sentence.
