Earthquake of magnitude 4.8 recorded in Fuengirola: this is how it was felt around Malaga province

An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 with epicentre in Fuengirola has been recorded this Friday 5 December (initially Spain's National Geographic institute informed of a magnitude of 4.2). The earthquake happened at 10.38am, at a depth of 77 kilometres, and was felt in different parts of the province and in Malaga city.

According to sources at the IGN, the earthquake was also felt in other Andalusian provinces such as Granada, Cordoba and the Guadalquivir Valley area. In Malaga, people on the Costa del Sol, from Estepona to neighbouring Motril (it was felt in Benalmádena, Chilches, Torrox and Nerja), noticed the earthquake. Inland, it was felt in Ronda, Antequera and Alhaurín de la Torre. Almost all users reported a slight tremor lasting between 2 and 5 seconds.

‘It was felt very strongly in Benalmádena near Xanit. The leaves on the plants moved and it was a very unpleasant sensation,’ said hugogonz_1744194739, a subscriber to SUR.

Juan González explains: "I felt it in Arroyo de la Miel at 10.38. I live on the top floor of a four-storey building. It was like the strong rattling you experience on a train when it changes tracks."

Earthquakes of this magnitude are not common, but according to sources at the seismic institute, "they are not extraordinary either", as they are recorded "from time to time". On Monday 1 December, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded another earthquake measuring 3.2 in the early hours of the morning, with its epicentre in Estepona. That earthquake occurred at 6am and was located at a depth of 52 kilometres.
