Thousands of people hit the streets of Marbella and San Pedro for the grand switch-on of the Christmas lights on Thursday.

The festive spirit has been taken to a total of 90 streets and 15 squares where the lights will stay on for 38 days in total.

New this year is the display in the Alameda park, where the lights will dance to music in a spectacular show every day at 7pm and at 8.30pm on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Another attraction is the giant bauble in Calle Marqués del Duero in San Pedro. The bauble measures 12 metres in diameter and has 70,000 light bulbs. Here too there will be a sound and light show every day at 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

The Christmas decorations this year include eight Nativity scenes (opened on Friday 1 December). four Christmas trees, and lights saying "Feliz Navidad" and "Feliz Año Nuevo".

It is hoped that the lights and the music shows will attract people to the town and boost local business.

The Christmas lights in Fuengirola and Malaga were switched on last Friday.
