Malaga tennis player Alejandro Davidovich came out on the losing side to Borna Coric in an epic round-of-16 clash at the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday.

The match, which lasted three hours and 27 minutes, ended with a score of 6-7 (5) 6-3 7-6 (5) in favour of the Croatian.

Davidovich had several key opportunities to win and squandered them, in a match in which he was never behind on the scoreboard, but ended up losing.

The percentage of break points taken was the clearest indication of which way a hard-fought win was going to go. Coric won 45 per cent of those played, compared to 21 per cent by the player from Rincón de la Victoria, who had a great chance to go deep into this Masters 1000 in Madrid, with the German Daniel Altmaier (88th) awaiting in the quarter-finals.

Davidovich will now turn his attention to the upcoming Italian Open, where he will hope to have a better showing.
