The National Police arrested on Sunday a woman for leaving her grandson alone at her home in Palma de Mallorca.
According to a press release, ... at around 1am on 16 August, the police received a call from neighbours reporting that a child was alone on a fourth-floor balcony.
Upon arrival, the police noticed several people on the street looking towards the building. They went up to the fourth floor and entered a neighbour's flat. Once there, an officer was able to speak to the child from the next-door balcony.
The boy looked anxious and explained that he was home alone and that his grandmother had gone out to look for a relative. The boy asked the police to stay with him, as he couldn't open the door.
The police spoke to the boy to calm him down and asked him to go inside the house while they tried to gain access to the property.
The security forces then spoke to several women, who explained that, at around 11pm, they had found the boy screaming on the fourth-floor landing with the door to his flat open.
They rang the grandmother, who turned up half an hour later, in a bad mood at having been disturbed. The woman picked up the child and took him inside.
Later, a neighbour heard the boy shouting and calling for help again, so she stayed with him to reassure him until the National Police arrived.
While the police were dealing with the situation, the grandmother turned up, claiming that she had gone out to do some shopping and that the boy had only been left alone for ten minutes.
The police managed to contact the mother, who was at work, and a relative took charge of the child. They arrested the grandmother on suspicion of child neglect.
