Eduardo Iturrizaga has been crowned men’s champion of the 88th Spanish Chess Championship in Marbella, a title he has won for the third consecutive year. In the women's category the winner was Sara Khadem, who won for the first time in this event. Two other players, Gerau Masague and Daniel Tabuenca, achieved international master status.
Marbella’s councillor for sport, Lisandro Vieytes said, "It has been a great privilege for the town to host the competition for nine days, which has seen great international figures and representatives from all the autonomous communities". She went on to commend "the great work carried out by the Spanish Federation, which will always have our support and collaboration".
The councillor pointed out that the tournament included a number of complementary activities with simultaneous games involving Paco Vallejo, who is the current number one in Spain and the young Ukrainian Alina Prochaieva, who played with schoolchildren from Xarblanca school.
Chess tables donated by Marbella businessman Sunil Wadhwani were inaugurated allowing people to play chess outdoors on Paseo de la Alameda. Vieytes also highlighted "the great media coverage of the event”, which was live streamed on a number of platforms
