20 covers to sum up 2,000 editions 1 20 July 1984 Edition number one of SUR in English had 16 pages and international news, including Margaret Thatcher, on the front cover. 100 13 June 1986 The front page advertisement announced the upcoming concert by singer Manolo Escobar (Que Viva España) at Tivoli World. 200 20 May 1988 On the front cover of edition 200, SUR inEnglish was at The Money Show opened by the Mayor of Marbella, Alfonso Cañas. 300 27 April 1990 The front cover carried the news of the killing of the 'Great Train Robber', Charles Frederick Wilson, who was shot in Marbella. 400 27 March 1992 Preparations were well under way for Expo '92, due to open later that year in Seville, where SUR in English was to be distributed. 500 4 March 1994 The EU had signed up new members: Sweden, Finland and Austria. SUR in English was promoting Andalucía at the ITB fair in Berlin. 600 2 February 1996 The Sierra Nevada ski resort was all set to host the World Championships and the Costa toll motorway project was “at a standstill”. 700 2 January 1998 The first edition of the New Year displayed some local folklore with an image of the traditional Verdiales festival. 800 3 November 1999 The news on the cover was international, while inside saw a report on how systems were preparing for the dreaded “millennium bug”. 900 2 November 2001 News inside spoke of a new “ambitious” retail park project that would be called Málaga Nostrum and cost 15 billion pesetas. 1000 3 October 2003 On the front cover of this 104-page edition there was still space to celebrate the milestone: athlete 1000 crossed the finish line. 1100 2 September 2005 The cover showed a giant paella at the Torremolinos tourist day; inside foreign residents had increased the province’s average age. 1200 3 August 2007. Malaga’s famous Cautivo image of Christ accompanied tourism news on the front page. 1700 3 March 2017 The cover featured the sad death of Pablo Ráez, the young Marbella man whose bone marrow donor campaign made him famous. 1800 1 February 2019 The headlines were still full of the story of Julen, the toddler who fell down a borehole in Totalán, sparking a massive rescue operation. 1900 1 January 2021 Exactly 100 weeks ago, on New Year’s Day 2021, Covid vaccinations and the UK’s Brexit deal made the front page. 2000 2 December 2022 The Christmas angel lights in Malaga's Calle Larios make edition 2000 a festive one.
