What could be more iconic in Torremolinos than the remains of the towers and mills that gave the town its name, in the days long before tourism became the area's main industry?
One of the few towers from that period that is still standing is the Torre de Pimentel and it is located in what is now the town centre. It has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) for its historical value, but it is abandoned. Now Torremolinos town hall has ambitious plans to bring this tower out of oblivion and give it the importance it deserves.
In May of this year, the local council requested a grant of 750,000 euros from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism to carry out a project with which they intend to allocate 400,000 euros to the renovation of the tower and just over 300,000 euros for the creation of a one kilometre tourist route, which would connect the Torre de Pimentel with another BIC in Torremolinos, the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Cultural Centre.
If the project is given the go ahead it will give tourists a better insight into the town's important historical heritage.
