Torre del Mar to serve giant cake free of charge to more than 4,000 people
The Poniente promenade is hosting a tasting of the six-square-metre dessert, created by chef Roberto Soler, during the VIII Día del Turista
Torre del Mar is celebrating the VIII Día del Turista on 27 August with a free tasting of a giant cake that more than ... 4,000 people will be able to enjoy.
The event on the Poniente promenade starts at 8.30pm.
At the presentation of the event, Torre del Mar Deputy Mayor Jesús Pérez Atencia said that the aim of the initiative is to "pay tribute and thank all those who choose to spend the holidays" in the Costa del Sol every year.
As usual, the initiative features the collaboration of Torre del Mar-based chef Roberto Soler, from the Sabores cooking school. He is in charge of creating the "spectacular giant cake" measuring nearly six square metres.
The theme of this year's event is inspired by the history of Torre del Mar's lighthouses.
According to Atencia, "initiatives like this help revitalise the town, offer a variety of experiences and enrich the summer programme".
"We have swapped the traditional oblong shape for a rectangular cake with a surface area of around six square metres, reviving the style of the first maritime-themed cakes we made back when we first started," chef Roberto Soler said.
As for the decoration, he explained that they would be going back to basics with a focus on the fondant figures, "some of which are larger than anything we've ever made before, alongside edible soil and a vast sea made from cream".
As Soler explained, this year's quantities will exceed those in previous years. He and his team will use a total of 100 sheets of white sponge cake, which, if laid out in a line, would stretch 60 metres.
In addition, they will use around 350 litres of vegetable cream, 50 litres of spiced syrup to keep the cake moist, 60 kilos of speculoos cream and 15 kilos of ground speculoos biscuits for the filling. The decoration will require approximately 80 kilos of fondant.
