The Mahou San Miguel brewing group has said that it invested 3.9 million euros more in 2017 at its Malaga production facility, next to the airport. Some 30 different improvements were made to bring the total investment made in the brewing facility in the last decade to 28.6 million euros.

Plant director, JosƩ Manuel Huesa, has said that the main investments last year included the replacement of two pasturisers (on the cans and litre-bottle production lines) and the merging of two laboratories into one.

The majority of the improvements made are to help the company meet its objectives of reducing water and energy usage. While the amount of beer brewed at the plant has increased 24.2% since 2002, the unit consumption of water has fallen by 17.1% and energy by 25.5%. The firm also says its carbon dioxide emissions have gone down over 50% in the same period.

Malaga has the second largest production capacity of Mahou San Miguel's seven breweries. Currently 170 million of litres is produced a year by the airport but there is room to go up to 250 million.

The site opened over 50 years ago and employs 150 people, and the company has been keen to stress its commitment to the local area and economy.
