Disney brings to Malaga production of Far Cry, starring Steve Buscemi

Little else was revealed about this production, but the mystery now has a title. The FX channel, part of the Disney group, is the producer of this series, which is adapting the popular Far Cry action video game franchise.

The Hollywood-backed production has signed up Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire, Fargo and Reservoir Dogs), who will lead the cast.

Malaga city is once again the setting for a major production, following the filming in recent years of Black Mirror and The Crown (Netflix); The Girlfriend (Amazon), directed by Hollywood actress Robin Wright, which secured two Golden Globe nominations; Kaos (Netflix), the most expensive production ever filmed in Spain; and the miniseries We Were the Lucky Ones, set against the backdrop of the Holocaust and also produced by Disney.

The original Far Cry is a first-person tactical action video game released in 2004. It now has six instalments. Its protagonists explore exotic locations, from tropical islands to deserts, while engaging in gunfights.

Following in the footsteps of HBO's successful adaptation of the video game The Last of Us, the Far Cry project is the first major production following the agreement between FX and Ubisoft to adapt the latter's video games.

At the helm of this production are showrunners Noah Hawley, who is behind the series Alien: Earth (also on FX) and Fargo, and Rob Mac, creator of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Steve Buscemi is returning to Spain for this shoot, after taking part earlier this year in the second season of Murderbot (Apple TV), which was filmed in Spain under the direction of Fresco Film.

Buscemi worked with the Coen brothers on the original Fargo film, which Hawley later adapted for the small screen.

Sur Film is in charge of overseeing the filming of Far Cry in Spain. With extensive experience in feature films and drama series, the Canary Islands-based production support company is a regular partner of Disney and other major Hollywood studios, for whom it has managed high-profile international film shoots, such as The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Wonder Woman 1984, Venom: The Last Dance and Andor.

Production company FX has also announced that the third lead in Far Cry will be actress Lizzy Caplan (Cobweb and Zero Day). The plot remains a closely guarded secret.

The only detail we know for now is that, as in the original video game, each season will feature different actors, characters and storylines.

In the US, FX will release the series on its channel, while Disney+ will release it to the rest of the world.

The Far Cry franchise was previously adapted in 2008 by German director Uwe Boll: a modest B-movie starring Til Schweiger.

The filming of Far Cry will be the first major Hollywood production in Malaga this year.
