The latest increase is mainly due to the increase in the cost of raw materials as well as the appreciation of the euro against the dollar

The price of a standard cylinder of butane gas in Spain has risen again despite the cost of electricity dropping to record lows recently. As of Tuesday 19 March the price of a regular bottle will rise by 4.91% and cost 16.67 euros.

This is the highest price in the past year, two euros more than what it cost just six months ago, but still far off the record 19.55 euros reached in May 2022, due to the energy crisis resulting from the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The price of the butane cylinder is reviewed every two months by the Spanish government and its rise or fall depends on the cost of the raw material (propane and butane) on international markets, as well as the cost of freight (transport) and the evolution of the euro-dollar exchange rate. Increases are always capped at 5%.

The latest increase is mainly due to the increase in the cost of raw materials (+4.88%) as well as the appreciation of the euro against the dollar (-0.05%) in the past two months. Some 64.5 million gas cylinders are used annually. From 2010 to 2021, the total consumption of bottled gas has fallen by more than 25%.
