National Police officers in Malaga are hunting a violent thief after his victim died in hospital, some six months after she was attacked when returning home after doing some shopping.

The woman, who had just turned 60, suffered serious injuries in the assault when she opened the door to her apartment building and the attacker tried to rob her of her purse and mobile phone.

The incident happened on 28 April on Calle Ferrándiz, in the Victoria district of the city. The victim was well known and loved in the neighbourhood. Worried relatives, after not seeing the woman for hours and her not answering the phone, called the police. Firefighters eventually gained access to the property and found the victim lying on the floor in the entrance hall surrounded by shopping bags. She had been there for hours

At first, it was thought that the woman had suffered some kind of fainting episode, as she was almost unconscious. However, when the health workers treated her they found that she had been the victim of an assault.

Intensive care unit

The woman was admitted to the Regional Hospital in Malaga with a double jaw fracture and head trauma. According to sources, she entered and left the intensive care unit on several occasions and suffered several strokes during her admission. She died last week.

The National Police force is working to identify the person responsible for the robbery with violence, who is now also as a suspect in a possible murder. The victim’s mobile phone and purse have not yet been located.
