A 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged with an offence of reckless driving after he almost hit six people on pedestrianised streets in Malaga city centre.

Startled onlookers watched in disbelief as the driver behind the wheel of a white Porsche Cayenne drove up the famous Calle Larios shopping street at “high speed” with music blaring and an arm out of the window at around 10.30pm on Monday, 13 March, and people ran for their lives.

One witness estimated the luxury sports utility vehicle was travelling at 70 kilometres per hour. Another claimed it was going even faster.

At the Plaza de la Constitución the driver almost ran over four guards in charge of security at the Malaga Film Festival. They had to jump out of the way to avoid him as did many others. He also almost hit a couple of public relations people from nightclubs in the centre and two female teenagers. He grabbed one of them by the arm and dragged her for about ten metres, forcing her to run to avoid falling to the ground, according to sources close to the investigation.

There was a Local Police vehicle in the square which pursued the Porsche as it continued along the pedestrianised Calle Granada. The high-end vehicle, worth in the region of 100,000 euros, was forced to slow down because of tables on the terraces and came to a stop due to crowds at Plaza del Carbón.

The two police officers jumped out of their vehicle and arrested the Belarusian driver. When questioned about what had happened, he was unable to give a logical explanation as to why he had driven 500 metres through a pedestrian area in the centre of the city. He tested negative in a breathalyser test for alcohol.

According to SUR sources, he has no previous convictions in Spain and the vehicle was not listed as stolen. The arrested man recently moved to a small village in the Guadalhorce area.
