SUR and SUR in English, among other Vocento titles, are renewing the print and web versions, strengthened by an improved design and a new typeface

For decades, SUR and SUR in English have been delivering news from Malaga and the rest of Spain to thousands of readers. First in print and then online, the newspapers' formats may have changed but their commitment to publishing accurate and reliable information remains the same.

Now, from 28 April, SUR and SUR in English are embarking on a new era, a change in form and content but without compromising our essence and identity.

SUR and SUR in English, along with other titles in the Vocento media group, have committed to a global redesign that will transform all media: from the print newspaper to the website.

And the change starts with the basic tools of our trade: letters and words.

Here is the new typeface for SUR and SUR in English. In case you haven't noticed, this font you are now reading is different from the usual one. This is just a preview of what will be, from Tuesday 28 April, the voice of the newspaper.

Vocento's design team and that of Extra Estudio, led by the graphic designer Íñigo Jerez, have come up with a design to suit the character of the Vocento newspapers, creating a typeface that will be the flagship for the changes coming from this week.

"We wanted it to be free of superficial styling; at the service of comfort," explained Jerez. "We wanted it to be so neutral that readers would forget that it was there to transport them effortlessly to the abstract plane of the message. But also, as it accompanies a proper name, it should have a personality that is perceived in a subtle yet firm way."

"After months of craftsmanship," as Fernando Hernández, Vocento's Director of Design and Experience, points out, the new 'Vocento' typeface family has been born. It is made up of twenty-eight variants, fourteen of the subfamily with serifs ('tails'), designed for text composition. It has seven thicknesses, from the thinnest version ('ExtraLight') to the...

... to the thicker version ('ExtraBold'). The 'Sans' version has the same structure, as a complement to the serif letters. "This 'slab' style typeface," says Hernández, "is perfect for a coherent, modern reading experience with its own seal".

The style to which Hernández refers is characterised by thick, rectangular headlines, recognised for its great visual strength, low contrast between strokes and excellent legibility, especially in the headlines, where it "responds to the need for forcefulness", thus meeting the primary standard of journalism: rigour.

Moreover, Jerez explains, "Its generous aperture makes it work particularly well for typesetting". It is versatile enough to read well in print and on screen.

Unlike literature, when it comes to news, typography must also clearly identify the most important information, even more so in the current context of noise and misinformation. In the case of the new 'Vocento', "the typographic ecosystem offers multiple possibilities for highlighting", with the aim of guiding the reader's eye to the parts that will catch their attention: headlines that summarise, crossheads that lighten the columns or pull quotes with key ideas.

What was the source of inspiration? "We started from our hallmarks - the Guardian and IBM Plex - because we were looking for a change that would maintain the character of the paper, but differentiate it from the rest," says Hernández.
