Torremolinos puts demolition project out to tender to pave way for El Calvario social hub

Torremolinos council has put out to tender the demolition of disused buildings on the site of the former Virgen de la Esperanza child protection centre, marking the first concrete step towards the development of the future El Calvario social hub.

The project, with a budget of 575,872 euros, will make it possible to clear and prepare part of a 15,420-square-metre site transferred to the town hall by the Andalusian regional government for social purposes. The main building of the former child protection centre is included in the land transfer to the local authority and will be retained for future refurbishment and social use.

The work will include the demolition of unfinished and disused buildings occupying a significant part of the site, particularly the property next to Calle Ecuador. The council said the current condition poses risks to safety and public health due to unauthorised access, incidents of squatting, accumulated waste and uncontrolled vegetation growth, which has “concerned local residents for years”.

The town’s mayor, Margarita del Cid, said that removing these structures will also make it possible to organise the site more effectively and move forward with the development of the planned future public services.

“With this tender, we are beginning to turn into reality a project we have been working on for a long time, which will allow us to recover a strategic site in the heart of El Calvario for the people of Torremolinos.”

The future social hub is envisaged as a continuation of the urban and social regeneration carried out in this part of El Calvario, which previously transformed the former municipal market into the current Isabel Manoja community development centre.
