According to data from the regional government, which maintains an active surveillance programme to prevent the transmission of West Nile Virus, Torremolinos is at a medium level of risk.

In this context, the local administration has activated a contract for the hiring of a specialised technical assistance service for the entomological surveillance of culicid mosquitoes, the taxonomic identification of the species. This includes the detection of the pathogen using molecular diagnostic techniques and the development, implementation and updating of the Torremolinos municipal vector surveillance and control plan (Pmvcv).

The frequency of this advisory service has been set for the years 2026 and 2027 and, according to the documentation supporting this tender, responds to the classification relating to the Torremolinos area.

The amount of this contract is 40,000 euros, for the two years, before taxes, and includes 16 annual samplings, eight mosquito trapping stations, taxonomic identification, an estimated number of between 30 and 50 PCR analyses per year and the permanent updating of the Torremolinos municipal vector surveillance and control plan.

Positive results for West Nile Virus must be reported within a maximum period of 12 hours, and the annual report must be submitted before 15 December of each year. The municipal control plan must be kept up to date throughout the duration of the contract, incorporating adjustments and new surveillance points according to the evolution of the vector and health situation.

Entomological surveillance will be targeted primarily at species of the genus Culex, potentially implicated in the transmission of West Nile Virus.
