Work advances to heritage museum in Rincón de la Victoria

The refurbishment and modernisation work at the Benagalbón Museo de Artes Populares (museum of folk arts) in Rincón de la Victoria on the eastern Costa del Sol are progressing well and are now 20 per cent complete.

The project will modernise the facilities, expand the exhibition space and improve the accessibility and functionality of the venue, whose aim is to preserve and promote the municipality’s traditions and ethnographic heritage.

Councillor Sergio Díaz, said: “With this work, we are going to significantly improve both the condition of the building and its functionality, by renovating the spaces and facilities and incorporating the former sports club into the museum’s floor space.”

The Mayor of Rincón de la Victoria, Francisco Salado, said: “This project represents an important step towards showcasing one of the spaces that best represents the history, traditions and identity of Benagalbón and the municipality. We want the museum to have renovated facilities that are accessible and adapted to current needs, while maintaining and strengthening its role as a space for promoting our heritage.”

The refurbishment involves the creation of a spacious, open-plan exhibition hall, as well as a reception area, an accessible toilet and a storage area. The work involves the complete refurbishment of the cladding, suspended ceilings, flooring and joinery and the air-conditioning, lighting, ventilation, water supply and drainage systems will be upgraded. Waterproofing work will also be carried out on the façade, as part of the premises lies below street level.

With regard to accessibility, the location of the entrance door will be altered and the existing ramp removed. The work will provide a more spacious, functional and accessible space, with improved health and safety conditions and facilities that comply with current regulations.

Work began at the end of July and is being carried out by the contractor Serconsa, with a budget of 158,101 euros, including VAT, funded entirely by the Malaga's provincial authority, the Diputación de Málaga. The expected completion time is three months.

Salado explained that the museum “will open its doors completely refurbished and will form part of the municipality’s network of heritage sites”, alongside the Cueva del Tesoro, the Cueva de la Victoria, Villa Antiopa, the Casa Fuerte Bezmiliana and the historic watchtowers.
