The Gibraltar government has published a Bill to precede a new law regarding the production, import, export, marketing and supply of cannabis for medicinal purposes.
The government says it is keen to support the efforts of the private sector by establishing the appropriate legal and regulatory architecture to create a robustly regulated medicinal cannabis industry that is regulated fully in compliance with the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.
However, it stresses that only the most reputable businesses will be licensed under the proposed new regulations and those granted a licence will need to conduct their operations fully in compliance with the statutory framework.
Announcing the Bill, the chief minister said that medicinal cannabis as a business is predicted to continue to expand globally for the foreseeable future, and the Gibraltar government is of the view that this new industry, comprehensively regulated to the highest standards, could well create an innovative and thriving sector of Gibraltar's economy.
