The Junta de Andalucia’s delegate in Granada, Pablo García, has activated Level 1 of Infoca’s Emergency Plan for Forest Fires this Wednesday afternoon, 8 December, after a blaze was reported in the town of Gualchos. Level 1 is activated when there is a risk to people and property.
At the moment, the emergency services in the area have evacuated, as a precautionary measure, some fifty homes in the upper area of the town.
The 112 emergency service number received the first of around 20 calls at around 2pm, warning of a fire in pine trees and scrub, in the area known as del Conjuro.
Motril firefighters, Guardia Civil, Local and National Police officers and Protection volunteers joined five Infoca firefighting crews and five fire engines.
Air support could not be provided because of the strong winds in the area.
