The Andalusian regional government issued a statement at the start of Holy Week to ask the population to take precaution against the spread of the stomach bug (gastroenteritis), cases of which have started to increase.

The regional ministry of health highlights the importance of taking preventative measures. This highly contagious virus is primarily transmitted through direct contact with infected individuals and can affect people of all ages. It typically causes symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, which appear suddenly and, in most cases, resolve within a few days.

The regional government reminds the population that washing hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before preparing or eating food, helps to stop the spread of the virus. Disinfecting surfaces with diluted bleach and avoiding handling food if experiencing symptoms consistent with infection also helps.

In terms of treatment, experts recommend maintaining adequate hydration with water, broths or rehydration solutions, avoiding alcoholic or sugary drinks, eating light meals and getting enough rest.

When to see a doctor

Although there is no specific treatment or vaccine for this infection, basic care is usually sufficient for recovery. However, health authorities recommend seeking medical attention if diarrhea lasts more than three days, if vomiting makes it difficult to keep fluids down, if blood appears in the stool or if the symptoms affect vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly or patients with pre-existing conditions. People should also be alert for signs of dehydration such as dry mouth, dizziness or decreased urination.

The regional ministry of health states that the adoption of these measures contributes to reducing transmission and protecting the health of the entire population.
