The town hall in Torrox announced earlier this week plans to convert the former teachers' residences next to the Colina del Sol primary school in the old town into a boutique hotel.
Mayor Óscar Medina said that town hall staff are working on a technical and administrative report which will allow the council to go out to tender for the project before the next local elections.
According to Medina, if the hotel, which he says is "in its very early stages", goes ahead, it will offer 40 bedrooms and panoramic views of the coast as well as the Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountain range.
The 14 former teachers' houses have been empty for over a decade, despite a brief period in 2011 when squatters occupied some of the buildings.
Medina said that this project, along with plans to build another hotel next to the Iberostar Málaga playa in Torrox Costa, are designed to "stimulate tourism after the pandemic". He added that the town "needs more hotels".
