The founder and head of SFJAZZ, currently one of America's trend-setting musical venues, was in Malaga this week to give his backing to a project to transform the site of the old Astoria cinema on the city's Plaza de la Merced.

Randall Kline launched his San Francisco venue in 2013 and developers from Cordoba invited him to see for himself how they want to build a theatre space below street level, with bars and restaurants above and room for an extension to the Fundación Picasso birthplace foundation.

The project to replace the disused building still needs to clear several hurdles. After demolition, an archeological dig will be needed to see if the theatre can be built.

Kline said, "The museums are fantastic here, tourism is obviously great, but having a cultural centre in the heart of the city could be something really transformational."
