An exhibition called Art vs Covid-19 which has been organised by the Masa-UK Art Gallery in Bury, GreaterManchester, can now be seen at the Fine Arts Gallery in Gibraltar until 25 July.
The aim of this project is to show how art brings people together and has made them stronger and more resilient during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This exhibition, which has been curated by Matija Sapundjieska, contains works by 13 artists from Austria, Spain, Argentina and Gibraltar, and it is seen as a response to the way the coronavirus virus has affected and continues to affect the whole world.
Some of those effects were clear to see at the official launch of the exhibition earlier this week. Events such as this would normally be extremely popular and under normal circumstances the gallery would have been packed, but on this occasion it was only attended by Gibraltar's Minister for Culture, John Cortes, and Minister for Health, Paul Balban, the organisers and a few of the artists.
Social distancing and other health and safety measures were also in force.
Dr Cortes explained that culture becomes even more important than usual during difficult times such as these, because it gives people their identity, gives them hope, and allows them to express themsselves while defining who they are in terms of a community.
For his part, Paul Balban said the exhibition offered an insight into how the virus had affected and touched us all. The display contains a variety of art formats including photography and sculpture, different materials and a wide range of styles.
The exhibition will be open from Mondays to Saturdays, from 10am-2pm, until Saturday 25 July.
The Fine Ats Gallery is centrally located, on the first floor of Casemates Barracks in Casemates Square.
